Weed, Weeds, and More Weeds!
How to Get Rid of Weeds Naturally
Welcome to another story in my Natural Home Care Series! Where I invite you into my home and share my learning experiences of “green” country living!
One thing is for sure—Vermont is very green! And in this case I am not talking about an environmental stance; no I literally mean Vermont has got to be the greenest place I have ever lived! The trees, grass, flowers! Saying Vermont is lush is an understatement to say the least!
Now after living in Colorado for fifteen years (which I loved!), I wasn’t quite prepared for Vermont’s growing season. Though Colorado is very beautiful, it can’t compare to what I was about to experience.
The home I moved into came complete with “idiot proof” flower gardens and stone walking paths. Great! That’s perfect for me! I certainly don’t pretend to have a green thumb, though I do adore nature and well manicured gardens. So all I would have to do is pull a weed from time to time. No problem!
Um…Problem!!!!
After an unusually warm winter followed by an extremely rainy spring, the rate of growth for plants was exponential!
So like a good new “Vermont” gal, I put on my gardening gloves and flowery Vermont boots; it is after all, in the Vermont rule book that you must buy a pair of rubber boots with a bizarre flower pattern on them in order to be accepted into the state. So with my boots on, I got to work weeding!
And weeding, and weeding, and more weeding!
Seriously, it appeared to me that as soon as I pulled one weed, five instantly grew in its place! Over night the growth was overwhelming. Did you know that a simple dandelion can grow to be three feet tall; don’t even ask how I could have missed it! I swear I must be on some Gardening Reality Show in their version of Candid Camera! Needless to say, I need help!
So once again, the battle was on! This time, it’s me against the invasion of the monster weeds!
And once again I’m faced with the dilemma of using poison, or finding a green, non-toxic alternative.
Poison sure does come up a lot! First there was my run-in with stubborn “indoor” ants, then the house mouse stowaway saga, and now monster weeds that repopulate faster than bubbles in boiling water.
So I head over to Home Depot and attempt to find a natural solution. OMG! I had no idea that poison was such big business!
There is a poison to kill “every and anything”!
And then…I see it. A natural weed killer. Sold.
I read the directions carefully and apply the solution and then waited…and waited…and waited.
Argh! It’s not working! So far in my Natural Home Care Series, the natural remedy always worked. Do I finally have to concede that natural remedies don’t always work?
Well not so fast! All I really needed to do was talk to a REAL Vermonter who got me right back on the natural path (pun intended!) I was told that an instant weed killer was nothing more than boiling water! And by simply adding a bit of salt would guarantee that the weeds wouldn’t grow back!
Really??
Okay, maybe some of you knew about this, but to me this was absolutely brilliant! I have lots of water! And boiling it is certainly something this city girl could handle! So I gave it try…
Let me tell you that the results were nothing less than amazing! And by dumping big pots of boiling water on the weeds, I was able to accomplish a lot fast!
With the help of this natural weed remedy, my weed situation is 100% under control and my gardens are beautiful! I still have to do some good old fashion weed pulling from time to time, but all and all – the boiling water tip does the trick!
LOL! Who knew?
