Pizza a Vegetable?
In Schools Nationwide the Answer is YES!
Okay, now I truly know the government officially has no clue what nutrition is! The FDA has long been known for their lack of actual nutritional knowledge for some time now, approving countless poisons in so-called food, but this? This takes the artificial and genetically modified cake!
Interestingly this debate hit the headlines back in 2011 and sadly, due a loophole, pizza can actually be counted as a vegetable and still is today:
“Pizza Wins Food Fight in Congress
Congress officially preserved pizza’s status as a vegetable
The change to nutrition standards for school lunches was a triumph for the frozen-food industry, which had been fighting restrictions on the definition of tomato paste, which they say is every bit as healthful as the larger quantity of tomatoes that produced it. And a loss, nutrition advocates say, for the scientific process that has historically guided decisions about food nutrition in the federal school-lunch program.
Language changing the definitions for a serving size of tomato paste was inserted into the agriculture spending bill as part of the must-pass continuing resolution…”
In Congress, The Is-Pizza-a-Vegetable War Rages On
“Okay, so Congress never actually declared pizza a vegetable during last year’s legislative battle over school lunches. But they might as well have: by declaring that an eighth of a cup of tomato paste is worth as much nutritionally as a half a cup of vegetables, the new rules opened a loophole that has given pizza vegetable-like status in school lunchrooms nationwide.
Now, however, a Congressman from Colorado is fighting back…”
So, Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable?
“The confusion about ‘fruit’ and ‘vegetable’ arises because of the differences in usage between scientists and cooks. Scientifically speaking, a tomato is definitely a fruit…”
So hang tight, you never know…Pizza may yet be declared as a fruit!
