And Be Amazed At What You Can Achieve!

Dr. Michelle Kmiec, Founder OHH

In order to discover the true potential of holistic health and healing, you must be honest with yourself and have an open mind.

Holistic Healthcare is very different from conventional medicine. Though conventional medicine does have a place in emergency care situations, it does not prevent health issues or restore a person’s true health. Instead, it treats symptoms with pharmaceuticals that only mask health issues so as to give the illusion of health. If the opposite were true, then all major health conditions and diseases would be decreasing…not increasing.

Conventional medicine does not address the root cause of health conditions. It takes away the personal control and responsibility that we should all have over our health by leading us to believe that only drugs can prevent and/or slow down, but never cure, health conditions.

Holistic Healthcare, however, focuses on the whole individual as opposed to just symptoms and disease. It considers the nutritional, physical and emotional needs that are unique to each person, as all three of these components are equally important in preventing or treating disease and maintaining optimal health. It’s not just about relieving pain and other symptoms associated with a disease. Rather, it’s about taking responsibility for your health and well-being through proper nutrition, movement and lifestyle choices, and most importantly maintaining an overall positive attitude toward your health.

When it comes to nutrition our society as a whole consumes an overabundance of processed foods containing artificial chemicals that have a negative impact on health. These foods are considered empty calories because they contain little to no nutritional value. So basically, day after day we continue to eat these empty calories to our already nutrient deficient bodies.

These processed foods also contain artificial sugars and chemically derived food dyes despite studies proving them to cause hyperactivity, severe allergic reactions, and even cancer. Not to mention that most of these artificial sugars and chemicals have been banned in many countries because of their ill-health effects.

We try to be healthy by incorporating several servings of fruits and vegetables into our daily meal plans. But unfortunately, this equals the daily consumption of pesticides despite the proof of their carcinogenic properties.

Over time, as people continue to eat these chemically laden vegetables and fruits, they are unknowingly creating underlying health issues which only continue to grow. And adding salt to injury, independent studies have shown that simply washing the produce doesn’t remove the toxic chemicals.

There is a belief that GMO, or Genetically Modified Organisms, are better for you than what nature intended. It’s important to note that GMOs are not the same thing as cross-pollination which occurs spontaneously in nature, though there are some who would like for you to believe this. Rather, GMOs are combinations created in a lab with an unknown consequence to organic beings. Yet despite extreme health concerns, GMOs continue to be cleared for human consumption unchecked for any oversight. And let’s not forget the addition of pesticides that are spliced into seeds of foods such as corn. Have you heard of Roundup Ready corn? (Scientist finding many negative impacts of Roundup Ready GM crops, 15 Health Problems Linked to Monsanto’s Roundup)

So why is it so difficult for us to make changes in our life even when we know that these changes will have a positive impact on all aspects of our health?

Well for starters, today’s world requires less physical movement. More and more of our daily tasks can be done sitting in a chair or a car. Interestingly, this inactivity is largely generation based.

Statistically, if you’re under the age of 20 it is primarily due to a lack of discipline and an inactive imagination resulting from less play in lieu of the instant gratification derived from technology – video games and social media. Have you noticed that children rarely play outside anymore? This is because they are obsessed with their small screens of illusion that disconnect their impressionable young minds and often leave them with a lack of compassion from the many popular games focusing on killing and the spilling of blood. Neighborhoods no longer ring out with the laughter and excited shouts of children as they once did not all that many years ago.

Unfortunately, what we are seeing in today’s world are children who are exceedingly more stressed out, and many who suffer from anxiety and depression, not to mention ADHD.

It used to be that we would sit in the classroom and our greatest distraction was the clock on the wall that seemed to be moving at a snail’s pace as we waited for the bell to ring. Sure, we worried about papers and exams and what friends we should hang out with over the weekend. But we certainly didn’t lose sleep over these things.

Today kids are constantly faced with an overabundance of homework and extracurricular activities, standardized testing in addition to class-specific tests, peer pressure, cyberbullying, violence and pressures brought on by overly competitive parents.

There are just too many demands put on today’s youth and so they start to question themselves and wonder if what they should be doing is in line with what they realistically can do.

So, Barely moving and in a constant state of stress, it’s no wonder that diabetes, obesity, heart disease, autoimmune and cancer are now more prevalent in children under the age of 10 than ever before in modern history.

Between the ages of 20 and 35, it’s a little different. Individuals in this age group have an “I know everything” mentality and feel that any adverse health issues are years away.  Therefore they are not overly concerned with healthy lifestyle practices. Basically, their mindset revolves around the idea that because they are still young, what they do today won’t affect their future health. Though this, of course, is nothing new. But what is new is the added lack of physical movement along with decades of artificial food-like stuff has created new health concerns that have never been seen before.

Furthermore, many between the ages of 20 and 28 have been taking pharmaceuticals for many years for a number of reasons.

Now, 35 to 60 years of age is considered middle age, and it’s this population who are feeling the repercussions of the world in which we live. For many, a polluted environment, poor food choices, and a lack of physical exercise have all contributed to the manifestation of pain syndromes, depression, anxiety, hypertension, insomnia, chronic stress and not surprisingly leading to eventual disease.

And beyond the age of 60, unfortunately, one out of three now take at least one to five pharmaceuticals and experience little to no quality of life… and this is considered normal. Well, I don’t know about you, but I don’t find anything about any of this to be normal.

The bottom line is that no matter an individual’s age, real health care is actually very simple. Isn’t it time to address the real cause as to why we don’t feel well and why we can’t maintain healthy choices? Don’t you want the control of your life to be in your hands instead of others? After all, it’s your life, and you need to own it!

Now that brings up a good question.

Why is it so difficult for us to make changes in our lives, even when we know that these changes will have a positive impact on our health? In fact, this was a question raised by some researchers not that long ago, and sadly they found that 80% of people who know they are doing things that have a negative impact on their health will continue to do so anyway.

Well, remember the only person who can bring your life back into balance and your health to its optimal state is you. Simply put, if you don’t take control of your life, outside influences will. In a world that has become so polluted and synthetic, it takes quite a bit of work to achieve optimal health, and for this reason, I’d like for you to keep in mind the 3 D’s.

  1. Desire – You have to desire a change in your life. That has to come first.
  2. Determination – You have to be determined and have the perseverance to attain a desired state of health. In other words…don’t give up!
  3. Discipline – You’re going to need to be consistent and build up your endurance in order for this to be a lifestyle change that will propel you forward and toward a lifetime of optimal health. And let me tell you, as a person who did turn their health condition around – it’s so worth it!

It’s also vital that you understand the Three Fundamental Concepts that support optimal health.

  1. The body must move. After all, life comes from fluidity, not from stagnation.
  2. The body must be given clean organic whole foods free of chemicals, often along with supplemental nutrition, in order to regenerate, heal and thrive.
  3. The body always responds to your true thoughts and beliefs, in other words, your authentic self.

It’s time for you to believe in yourself because anything is truly possible with a positive mindset! Let go of any negativity toward yourself and kick the defeatist attitude out the door! When you stop being your greatest obstacle—you will be amazed at what you can achieve!
