Bipolar and Lithium Orotate
What is an effective and safe Dosage of Lithium Orotate for Bipolar Disorder?
Q: Suffering bipolar 2 all my life…. I am 47 now in a major depression which have often lasted 6-9 months… Not on any meds, getting mixed up listening to all interviews between lithium orotate and lithium elemental… I have 120mg lithium orotate 4.6 mg elemental… How many do you recommend I take.
A: Hi! I love the mineral “carrier” or transporter orotate. It is the safest way to get the elemental mineral into your system. “Elemental” simple refers to the amount of the mineral needed and that can also be absorbed by the body via the “carrier”. In this case, the carrier is the orotate. Because orotate can get more “usable” amounts of elemental lithium into your system than the prescription form of lithium, Lithium carbonate, is why you can take less.
Regarding dosages:
Typical dosages of lithium orotate range from 30 mg – 800 mg per day. The higher dosages are usually broken up into 3 dosages per day and are most often for those with bi-polar or manic disorders, those recovering from alcoholism, as well as other disorders listed in ‘Conditions that Lithium May Help’.
It is best to start with 1 tablet of 120 mg (~5 mg of elemental) 1 – 3 times per day. This is most often sufficient.
However, especially in some bi-polar or manic disorders, an increase to 2 tablets 3 times a day proves more effective. In rare cases, up to a total of 8 tablets broken into 3 times per day is used until stabile. Then a lower dose can be used. Even at the highest dose however, lithium orotate is still safe and does not require kidney function tests.
For maintenance, typically 1 tablet twice per day.
